10 Ways to Improve and Boost Your Intimate Drive (Libido)

It's something that many post 50s deal with. Around half of menopausal women reported a diminished sex drive after menopause in one study. And men aren't immune to a loss of libido -- studies have shown that decreased testosterone and estrogen also impact men's sex drives as they age.

Blood flow:

‘Your health depends on elastic, flexible blood vessels to keep your blood flowing efficiently from your heart and lungs to other parts of your body,’ says Wilkinson. ‘When your blood vessels harden and clog, they
become less elastic. This makes it more difficult for your heart to pump blood through your vessels. You need good blood flow to help improve your sex life as it as the more blood to the sex organs the more intense the heavenly feeling. Cayenne pepper, oranges and root ginger all help improve circulation.’

Green Vegetables:

‘Mucous membranes are tissues that line organs and entrance points to your body including your nasal cavity, eyelids, windpipe and lungs, nose, mouth, urethra and genital organs,’ she says. ‘These areas are the first to be hit by invading parasites and microbes. Parts of both the womanliness and the joystick are mucus membranes. Green vegetables contain riboflavin which is required for healthy mucus membranes. Healthy mucus membranes will help prevent infection from bacteria. It will also help with lubrication of the womanliness which is essential for a healthy sex life for women.’

B vitamins:

‘B vitamins help to regulate the sex organs,’ explains Wilkinson. ‘The amount of Vitamin B in the body is correlated with the amount of sex hormones released. Vitamin B deficiencies can lead to lethargy and fatigue, which usually means more sleep and less sex. B vitamins also play a large role in helping to reduce anxiety. If you are anxious, your intimate desire can be diminished. Eggs, fish, milk and green leafy vegetables are all good sources of Vitamin B.’

Omega 3:

‘Omega 3 (an essential fatty acid found in oily fish, flaxseeds and walnuts) is the building block of sex hormones in men and women,’ she says. ‘And it helps fight the build up of plaque in the arteries, thereby improving circulation and increasing sensation. Omega-3 fatty acids also help with intimate response, by helping to raise dopamine levels in the brain that trigger arousal.’

Peanuts:

‘Peanuts are rich in L-arginine and a great natural source,’ explains Wilkinson. ‘L-arginine (an amino acid) is a building block of protein in the body, increasing blood flow to the intimate organs in both men and women. Some studies show L-arginine can also help with erectile dysfunction, due to its positive effect on blood vessels Arginine may help to increase vascular function (dilates blood vessels and promotes circulation) due to being a precursor to nitric oxide. This may help to dilate the blood vessels chiefly in the joystick. Nitric oxide is the key ingredient in the pharmaceutical drug, Viagra.’

Brazil Nuts:

‘Selenium (found in brazil nuts, sunflower seeds and oily fish) can have a significant effect on sperm production and mobility,’ she says. ‘Selenium also helps protect sperm from DNA damage through its antioxidant qualities. A deficiency of dietary selenium leads to immotile, deformed sperm and infertility in rats. Supplementation of the diet with selenium compounds has been associated with both beneficial and deleterious effects on sperm function.’

Watermelon:

‘There has been a great interest in citrulline recently, which is naturally found in watermelon,’ she says. ‘This is due to the fact that it is a precursor to arginine, which increases blood flow, in turn increasing arousal.’

Vitamin C:

‘Up your vitamin C intake, to help strengthen blood vessel walls,’ advises Wilkinson. ’Flexible blood vessels ensure efficient blood flow from the heart and lungs to the rest of the body. And good blood flow improves your sex life no end.’

Nicotine:

‘Nicotine is an enemy of your arteries,’ she states. ‘It can promote the formation of atherosclerotic plaque in the penile blood vessels, and can constrict them too. Plaque formation occurs, (presenting internally as sticky, yellow deposits), builds-up over time and hinders blood flow.’

Zinc:

‘Finally Zinc plays a vital role in maintaining prostate health, testosterone levels, and maintenance of healthy sperm,’ she explains. ‘Go for raw oysters to boost dopamine hormone production, which in turn, increases libido in both men and women. Healthy testosterone production is vital for both men and women, it’s also a major component of intimate desire.’.
